Oral & Aural Narrative

Methods Wk 3:

1. Aural Recording (seen), recording (10 minutes) male and female users within a retail community. Specifically record:

behavioural (audio) exchanges/ changes between all/ any users

audio commentary of individual behaviour in response to material culture

audio commentary of group behaviour in response to the built/ spatial environment

2. Aural Recording (unseen), recording (10 minutes) male and female users within a retail community. Specifically record:

behavioural (audio) exchanges/ changes between all/ any users

audio commentary of individual behaviour in response to material culture

audio commentary of group behaviour in response to the built/ spatial environment

3. Oral Recording (structured interview) of male and/or female users responses to the following questions:

a)     What are the differences between the work that men and women do in Aldgate today? Do these exist? Are these differences/ similarities positive or negative? Why?

b)     How do people behave differently to each other depending on the space that they are in ie. an alleyway or busy high street? How might it be different for men or women? If not, why not?

c)     Do people living in this area have the same views on women’s rights as you? Why are their views similar/ different to you? Is this important?

d)     Is there anything relevant to a study of gender and Aldgate that you think this research must acknowledge?

4. Oral Recording (unstructured interview) of 1 male and/or female users responses to the following topics:

a)     Aldgate as a representation of gender roles & world beliefs

b)     The effect of ‘place’ upon social behaviour: positive or negative

c)     The interviewee’s views upon the role of women within the home & work place
